仪式过程：
① 除夕夜，吃过年夜饭后，在（神）厅神案上燃好香烛。
② 庭院里早已准备好用以点起火堆的草料——“春草”（稻秸秆）和番薯藤。
③ 用春草迅速点火，待番薯藤烧起大火后，一切准备就绪。
④ 家中男丁在庭院起点处等候，由辈分最高的男丁带头最先跳过火堆，其他人按长幼顺序跳过。
⑤ 跳过火堆，拾阶而上，从正门进入“厝内”，一直走到神厅内的“天公灯”下，完成一趟。然后沿原路折回庭院里的起点处，接着跳。跳几趟都无所谓。
⑥ 待到火势渐歇，家中妇女手持火钳和瓦片（现在瓦片少了，可以用其他容器代替），从火堆里夹出一些未燃尽、带火星的番薯藤条，放入瓦片上，放到“房内”“眠床”下面。（只是夫妻住的“房内”才需要。单身汉的卧室就免了）
⑦ 还是辈分最高的男丁，手持扁担，将火堆往大门方向一打，让火星灰烬散开。
⑧ 燃放鞭炮。（家中没有扁担的话，可以直接将鞭炮扔进火堆里，火星顿时四溅。）
寓意：因为没有考据，也没有从大人那里听说过“跳火群”的涵义，所以这里仍然是大胆猜测：火历来是驱邪的工具，就像新娘子进门要过火炉一样，跳火群估计也是为了驱逐邪魔、祛除旧年晦气而举行的宗教仪式。夹火星置于床底估计是保留火种的意思。虽说是驱邪祛晦，旧年新年总是要有所传承，如此才是“群龙无首”的大吉卦象啊～～ 最后的打火堆，应该是想放满庭满院火星四溅，象征着红红火火的新年。
封建思想：“跳火堆”这一习俗严重保留了中国封建社会的传统思想：
（1）重男轻女思想。女性是不允许跳火堆的。小女孩例外，可以由其他人抱着一起跳过，保佑小孩子健康成长。但稍稍长大一些后，如果还想跳火堆，大人就会责备说：女孩子家，还不认分 。外人可能无法理解，但其实传统就是这样，大家都习惯了。
